If you are fortunate enough to have a home herb garden, you are aware of how using fresh can herbs add so much flavor to your cooking. But what if your herb garden produces more herbs than you can use? You definitely do not want to waste those delicious morsels, so the best way to preserve their delicious flavor is to dry your herbs.

This article will explain five tips about how to successfully dry herbs including tips on the best time for harvest, and when, where and how long to dry your herbs.

Harvest Your Herbs Just Before Drying

To help maintain the wonderful properties of your herbs, harvest immediately before you plan on drying them. The best time to harvest and dry herbs is when they are fully grown and have just started to flower. Before drying, make sure to remove any damaged leaves or stem.

Dry Herbs at Similar Rate

To make sure your herbs are all drying at about the same rate, harvest them in bunches which are about the same size. For drying, bunch about 8 – 10 stems together and fasten securely with string.

Dry Herbs by Hanging Upside Down

Once you have bunched your herbs together, you will need to hang them upside down to dry. Do not pack herb bunches tightly together. Leave a little room for air to circulate around the herbs.

Dry Herbs in a Dry, Dark Place

The best place to dry herbs is in a dark, dry location. If necessary, protect herbs from dust or wind by covering with a paper bag. The best temperature for drying herbs is 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Herbs Need 5 Days to Dry

In dark dry conditions; herbs usually take five days to dry, although in cooler weather, the process may take up to two weeks. When herbs are papery, they are dry and ready for storage. Remove leaves from stems, and store in airtight container away from sunlight.

Store dry herbs as leaves, but crush right before using. This will help the herbs to release their full properties. While fresh herbs are delicious, home grown, dried herbs are equally as wonderful and a simple way to have flavorful herbs at your fingertips all year round.

Good Morning America calls the AeroGrow AeroGarden, “One of the top new consumer products.”

Grow a wide variety of garden-fresh herbs, tomatoes, and other tasty vegetables naturally on your kitchen counter 365 days a year.

With the AeroGarden Space-Saver 6, you don’t need a green thumb to have your own home herb garden. The AeroGarden Space-Saver 6 is a fully automated indoor smart garden with built-in grow light that removes all guesswork. Everything you need is included!

What are people saying about the AeroGarden Space-Saver 6 with Gourmet Herb Seed Kit?

“Great Product!

I bought the AeroGarden Space-Saver 6 for my girlfriend and she loves it. It is amazing how fast plants grow in the product. Within twenty-four hours some of the herbs were already sprouting. The AeroGarden will also notify you when to add water and nutrients. The AeroGarden Space-Saver 6 is easy to assemble and fits perfect in corners on counter tops. I highly recommend the AeroGarden Space-Saver 6.”

“Excellent gift. A hobby for anyone. The Aerogarden Elite is a very well designed, easy to use and decorative as well for a kitchen corner. It uses an aerating water pump which runs very silently. Lamps turns ON for 16 hours every day so it can keep kitchen lit during night time. I love its contruction which has a stainless steel like finish on top where pods are located and should avoid corrosion due to moisture. The elite model is a bit more expensive but I believe is worth the extra cost.”

“Feels Cheap – But Delivers On Its Promise

I’m very happy Aerogarden decided to make a slightly smaller unit; their regular gardens take up so much space.

The Spacesaver comes in a huge box, but does not weigh much at all. The bulk of the box (and the unit) is nothing but some pieces of plastic. Installation is a breeze (if you read the manual correctly) and when it is all put together you do end up with a pretty sturdy setup, I just can’t help feel that it is all rather cheap for the price.

The unit itself has a neat control panel with indicators for all the various settings. All in all a good item, and a perfect gift if you can find it at the right price.”

One day at the grocery store, I spent almost $2.00 for a small bunch of basil. Now $2.00 may not seem like much, but when if you are like me and purchase fresh herbs each trip to the grocery store, after a while it begins to add up. That’s when I decided to start my own kitchen herb garden.

Growing herbs indoors really is actually pretty easy, especially if you keep your herb garden in an easy access, convenient location. If you are looking to start your own kitchen herb garden and enjoy fresh herbs all year round, read this article. You will learn the best way to start your own kitchen herb garden. You’ll also learn about basics tools for your garden, which herbs you should grow and what your kitchen herb garden needs to be healthy.

What You Need To Start Your Kitchen Garden

To get started setting up your kitchen herb garden, you’ll need to decide if you want your garden indoors or outside. It’s easiest to have either a small garden right outside your kitchen door or even right on the kitchen counter.

For your first garden, consider experimenting with container gardening. Container gardening allows your herbs to be portable, so if your herbs are not getting enough sun or there’s a sudden change in the weather, they can be moved to a better location.

Basic Tools & Supplies For Your Herb Garden

First, you’ll need containers for your herbs. Standard six-inch pots are a good option. Herbs like to have room for their roots to grow, so avoid shallow pots.

Next, visit your local nursery and pick up a bag of good quality, fast draining soil. Herbs do not like saturated soil or sitting in water, so you’ll also need enough small stones or gravel to put about a 1” layer in the bottom of each container for additional drainage. And last item you will need is the herbs themselves.

There are two options: seeds or starter plants. Most herbs can be grown from seed, but starter plants offer a quick start and instant gratification. Ask at your nursery for their recommendations.

Which Herbs You Should Grow

When deciding which herbs to grow, it’s really pretty easy. Parsley, basil, chives and mint are good basics, but it really depending on your personal taste. Start by checking out your spice rack. Which herbs do you use the most? If you drink herb teas, which ones are your favorites? Do you have a favorite herb that hard to find at your local grocer or it is expensive because it is consider “exotic”? Create a list of candidates and choose a few of your favorites for your first herb garden. It’s better to start with a small herb garden and add to it once you get the hang of herb gardening.

What Your Kitchen Herb Garden Needs To Be Healthy

One of the best reasons to start with a small garden in containers is maintaining your herbs are simple and not too time consuming. For your garden to be healthy and happy you will need:

1.	A good quality, well draining soil
2.	A minimum of six hours of sunlight, but preferably 10+ hours
3.	Watering on a regular basis
4.	Pruning, although if you are using your herbs regularly, this step will not be necessary.

“The kit arrived VERY quickly, and I got planting right away. The little peat pellets are a very clever way to start seedlings. I’ll be using them more in the spring to start my regular garden. The instructions vary for each different type of seed, and most of my seeds sprouted quickly. There was one that didn’t come up, but there is plenty of additional starter pellets and seed to do a second, and maybe even a third planting, so no worries.

Getting Started with Windowsill Herb Gardening

Whether you are someone who loves to use herbs when they cook or you are simply interested in having some useful greenery around, you will find that it is time for you to look into windowsill herb gardening. Whether you live in an apartment or in a small house, you will find that windowsill herb gardening is fast and a lot easier than you might think!

When you want to get started with windowsill herb gardening, look for the brightest window in your home. Ideally, you will have a southern window or a window with a southeastern exposure. This is going to be the window that has the most light on it, and for good growth an herb garden needs at least five to six hours of good sunlight every day. If you do not have a sunny window, you might be able to use fluorescent lights to the same effect, if you keep them on for ten hours a day.. The window should be accessible so that you can get to it and prune the herbs on a daily basis.

The containers that you use should be around six to twelve inches deep. Some people use a six inch pot for each herb, while other people prefer to use a long narrow container that will house all of them. When you are looking for the right plants for windowsill herb gardening, you will find that you are going to be better served by plants that stay dense and compact over ones that grow up tall and spindly. Mints are a great option, as is a parsley plant. Similarly, oregano and thyme are great choices.

When you are filling the pots, make sure that you get a good soilless potting mix, as this will allow you to avoid diseases that might be present in your gardening soil. When you fill the pot, make sure that you do not fill it too tightly or pack it down too well, because this will make the roots of your herbs struggle. The soil should drain well, and this is why a lot of people line the bottom of their pot with peat pellets or even small stones, in a pinch.

As your plants grow, remember that you should only water them sparingly. Herbs tend to do better in slightly dry soils. Also remember that you should feed them some fertilizer at least once a month. Look for fertilizers that are used for edibles. If you want to make sure that your plants grow thick and bushy, remember that you should snip and use them often. This will encourage them to grow out rather than up.

Are you someone who is interested in moving forward and growing herbs indoors? The truth of the matter is that growing herbs indoors is a lot less difficult than you might think, and with just a little bit of work and some research, you are going to have a great time enjoying the herbs that you can grow. Check out some of the information that you need to know below and make sure that you give it a shot; you’ll be surprised at how easy it is.

The first thing that you need to think about is placement. There are some herbs that will only grow if they have the sunniest spot around and when you are looking at growing herbs indoors, that definitely means a southern or a southeastern exposure. These are the windows that are going to get the most light, but if there is a building in the way, that might not be enough for an herb like basil, that needs lots of light to grow. Remember that a minimum of at least five hours of sunlight is important for most herbs that you can grow indoors, but if you cannot get that, you can supplement their light needs with a grow light as well.

When you are planning for your herbs, you are going to need a long narrow container or individual pots that can be mounted on your windowsill or in a sun room. Ideally, these pots are going to be between six and twelve inches deep, and that will give the herbs places to stretch their roots. Line the bottom of the container to make sure that you are gong to get good drainage. One way to ensure good drainage is to fill the bottom of the pot with peat or with vermiculite. You can also simply mix your soil with sand and humus in equal parts and get a good blend. Remember that you should not simply pull soil from just anywhere, particularly if you live in the city, because you might be bringing in soil borne diseases.

When you are planning on herbs, the easiest way to make sure that you are going to get the growth that you need is to purchase your herbs from a nursery. Getting seedlings that are healthy and that will thrive can make all the difference, but remember to slowly acclimatize them to the light. They might be going from a place that had plenty of light to one that is much less sunny.

What are the best plants to choose? There are plenty of herbs that do well indoors, but some of the best include chervil, chives, mint and parsley. Thyme, tarragon and sweet marjoram will do very well too.

Take a moment to learn more about growing herbs indoors. There are many different options available to you and you will find that this can be a great way to get your own herbs much more cheaply than you would at the store. Consider what herbs you need and what kind of areas you have available for growing herbs indoors!

Herb garden plants can make your home or garden come alive with scents of lavender or a host of the freshest spices for your meals. If you are a beginner, start with no more than ten plants. Maintaining an herb garden can be a little overwhelming if you have never had one. Your first year can be fun and exciting if planned just right.

Herbs like lots of sunshine and do not like to be saturated with water so a raised bed should be part of your herb garden plans. Four to six hours of sunshine will work just fine and build up your bed so your little plants are never sitting in a pool of water.

There are four different types of herbs that you may consider as a theme in your herb garden plans. Fragrance, culinary, medicinal and cosmetic are all choices for the seasoned herb grower but the beginner may choose to start with culinary for the first year. Read up on all the benefits that different herbs can be used for and you will find many different types of herbs that you may want to experiment with.

Providing an area for your herbs is important as they may spread and having in a designated spot will help the weeding go easier. Weeding is important in keeping your roots healthy. Many herb garden plans are designed close to the kitchen door since this is the room where all of the drying and preparation of food takes place. Nothing is easier or more rewarding than stepping outside your kitchen door and clipping off some fresh tarragon for your chicken meal.

Choosing a spot for your garden can be as easy as making a circle, square, rectangle or planting along a walkway or patio. You might even consider incorporating in an existing flowerbed where your existing plants thrive. Anywhere that can provide proper sun coverage and drainage will work just fine. In your herb garden plans, decide which plants are annuals, that last only one season or perennial that will return year after year so you don’t replant over the top of them.

Some basic starting herbs to consider in your herb garden plans might include basil, chives, dill, parsley, rosemary, sage, tarragon, thyme, campanula, catmint and cilantro. In your first year, you will discover that the sage will get larger than the rest so transplant in another spot and fill in the hole with parsley. After your first year you will see how the plants look against each other and you can better make your herb garden plans for the next year.

Lavender will make your garden bring out a scent that is absolutely luscious so spread some around and bring your chair over or build a high border where you can just sit and enjoy. Herb garden plans can create a sanctuary of pleasant, fresh food additives unlike any other found in a store and bring hours of joy with tending and preparing but planning is the key. Make your first year a pleasant one and you will look forward to adding different herbs in the following years.

You can use all types of pots and containers to grow herbs inside. Hanging containers and window boxes can also be used to cultivate herbs. However, the same essentials that are needed to grow outdoor garden herbs are required to grow herbs inside, meaning the correct mix of soil, light and water.

Sunlight, quality soil and adequate water are the three main things any plant requires to thrive. Herbs are certainly no deviation to this formula. Whether they are being grown indoors or in an outdoor garden, the crucial thing needed to grow herbs – or any type of plant – is the right amount of sunlight. In order to get the proper amount of sunlight for your herbs, position them in a kitchen or other room in window that faces south or west.

All herbs need a bright location to grow, but some types will have distinct light requirements from others. Like some home herb growers, you might want to use fluorescent lamps or “grow lights” to make up for inadequate sunlight. You need to also be sure to use the proper soil – not too rich – that will drain well so your herbs will thrive.

When you are growing herbs in containers, you should use two parts sterilized potting soil to one part coarse sand or perlite. You want to be sure that the herb has good drainage, so you will need to place about an inch of crushed rock in the bottom of each pot. To guarantee the soil is sweet enough for growing herbs in pots indoors, you can supplement one teaspoon of lime per 5-inch container.

Proper watering as another essential factor to productive for both indoor and outdoor herb gardening. The herbs do best in humid conditions, and you can achieve this by dampening the pebbles and misting the plants. Even though they will require more water when growing herbs in pots indoors than when they are grown in an outdoor herb garden, you need to be prudent not to over water them, which can cause the roots to become soggy and rot.

Having the flexibility to be able to move your herbs anywhere you please is a great benefit to growing herbs in pots. Perennial herbs will grow best if you place them outdoors during the summer months, but you can keep annual herbs indoors year round. However, you need to remember that any herbs you have outdoors need to be brought in before the first frost to avoid harm and foliage loss, except for tarragon, chives or mint… When these types of herbs are introduced to a light frost, they will go into a dormant period and then form fresher and firmer growth.

When growing herbs in pots, you will discover that some herbs do better than others in containers. For instance, mint will take over your garden if it is not contained.

Over all it is fairly easy to keep a healthily indoor herb garden. A great advantage of an indoor garden is that anytime you need your herbs for a recipe, they are right there within your reach.

You should be able to raise a great crop of plants in your indoor herb garden if you simply follow the tips we listed above. Make sure to include periodic feeding and yearly repotting should be a part of your herb gardening regimen for optimal results.
Also, pruning your herbs encourages new group, so make sure you harvest them occasionally, even if you do not need them right away (remember you can always dry them). Enjoy your fresh, delicious herbs in your cooking, teas, and crafts.
